Look at the end of the hair

A hair shed from the root is usually full length with a tiny pale bulb at the end. A broken hair is shorter, uneven in length and has no bulb.

Common causes of breakage

Hot irons, an overheated dryer, repeated colouring and rebonding, tight hair ties and rough combing of wet hair can weaken the shaft until it snaps.

Common causes of shedding

Family history, hormonal change, stress and general health are more linked to shedding from the root. These are better discussed in a suitability check or with a doctor.

What you can do today

Use less heat, a wide-tooth comb and looser ties, and pat hair dry with a towel instead of rubbing. If root shedding keeps increasing, note when it started.

Can breakage make hair look thin?

Yes. Many short broken hairs can make the ends look sparse even when shedding from the root has not changed.

Should I bring hairs to the consultation?

No need. The scalp check at the free consultation shows your scalp and hair shafts on screen.
