Hair shedding after a fever or illness: what to know
Many people notice more shedding a few months after a bad fever or a period of illness. Here is why, and when to get checked.

Why it shows up later
After physical stress such as a high fever, surgery or a long illness, more hairs can enter the resting phase. The shedding is usually felt later, as explained in the hair growth cycle.
Feeling anxious is normal
Seeing a handful of hair in the shower is worrying. Note when you were ill and when the shedding began, so a doctor can see the link.
Look after yourself as a whole
Sleep enough, eat a balanced diet and treat your scalp gently while you recover. Avoid heavy chemical treatments during this time.
When to see a doctor
If shedding continues, is patchy, or you are still unwell, see a doctor. Cosmetic treatment is best considered after a doctor has ruled out other problems.
